Weaning from Breastfeeding: A Gentle Goodbye
Weaning — whether it happens suddenly or gradually — is a deeply personal part of the breastfeeding journey. It marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, and it can stir up a lot of emotions: relief, sadness, pride, and everything in between.
There’s no “right” time to wean. Some moms follow their baby's lead; others make the decision based on work, health, or simply what feels right for their family. However it happens, one thing remains true: weaning is a transition, not a failure.
The process can be physical and emotional — for both you and your child. It might mean dropping one feeding at a time, offering extra cuddles, or introducing new routines to soothe and connect. And while it can feel bittersweet, it’s also a powerful reminder of how far you’ve come.
You nourished, comforted, and showed up day after day. Weaning doesn’t erase that — it honors it. Let yourself grieve if you need to. Let yourself celebrate, too. Because whatever the journey looked like, always remember you did something amazing.
