Preparing for Baby #3: A Realistic and Budget-Friendly Shopping Journey

Finding out you’re expecting your third baby brings a mix of emotions — excitement, confidence, and a little bit of “okay, let’s do this again.” This time around, things feel different. You already know what to expect, what actually gets used, and what you can live without.

For me, the reality really set in at 29 weeks. With baby #3 arriving in about 11 weeks (or sooner — because babies love to keep us on our toes), I realized it was time to finally start shopping and preparing.

Even though I started later than I did with my first two, I’ve learned that experience makes the process much simpler.

🧠 What’s Different the Third Time Around

With your first baby, it’s easy to feel like you need everything. By the third, you realize that less really can be more.

This time, I’m focusing on:

  • Essentials I know I’ll actually use

  • Reusing what I already have

  • Avoiding unnecessary purchases

  • Shopping smarter instead of buying more

One of the best decisions I made years ago was holding onto certain baby items — especially my crib.

🛏️ Reusing What Still Works

Saving my crib turned out to be one of the smartest things I’ve done.

With how expensive nursery furniture can be, being able to reuse something that’s still in great condition takes a huge weight off financially. It also reminds me that not everything needs to be brand new to be meaningful or functional.

If you’re expecting another baby, it’s always worth checking what you already have before starting your shopping list.

🛒 What I’m Shopping for This Time

Even though I have some essentials, there are still a few key items I need to complete my setup for baby #3.

Here’s what’s currently on my list:

  • Changing station: A simple, organized space for diaper changes

  • Bedside bassinet: For easier nighttime feeds and convenience

  • Swing or rocker: Helpful for soothing baby during the day

  • Rocking chair: Not a necessity, but definitely a personal must-have

🌙 The “Luxury” That Feels Like a Necessity

Let’s talk about the rocking chair.

Technically, it’s considered a “nice-to-have” — but for me, it’s something I won’t go without. Those quiet late-night feedings, the moments of rocking your baby back to sleep, and just having a comfortable place to sit make a big difference.

Sometimes, it’s okay to choose comfort — especially during a season like this.

💰 Shopping Smart: Why I Choose Gently Used First

This time around, I’m taking a more budget-conscious approach, and that means looking for gently used items before buying new.

One of my favorite places to shop is Once Upon a Child.

They offer a wide variety of gently used baby essentials, including:

  • Furniture

  • Baby clothes

  • Toys

  • Books and learning materials

What I love most is that you can often find items in great condition for a fraction of the original price. It makes preparing for a new baby feel much more manageable financially. In fact the changing table in the video, located at the bottom of this blog is from the store once upon a child.

🧳 Making Everyday Life Easier

As I prepare for baby #3, I’m also thinking about how to make everyday routines smoother — especially when leaving the house with multiple kids.

Having reliable, functional baby gear becomes even more important at this stage.

👉 If you’re building your baby essentials list, I’ve shared my recommended stroller setup and everyday must-haves here:

These are the kinds of items that make outings, errands, and travel feel a lot more manageable.

💡 Tips for Moms Preparing for Another Baby

If you’re getting ready for baby #2, #3, or beyond, here are a few things that have helped me:

  • Start with what you already have before buying new

  • Focus on essentials, not trends

  • Shop secondhand when possible

  • Give yourself flexibility — not everything needs to be perfect

  • Choose comfort where it matters most

Every baby is different, but your experience grows each time.

❤️ Final Thoughts

Preparing for baby #3 feels less about having everything perfectly in place and more about creating a space that works for your family.

It’s about being practical, intentional, and giving yourself grace along the way.

I’m excited to see what I find during this shopping journey — especially at my local Once Upon a Child — and I’ll definitely be sharing the treasures I come across.

If you’re in a similar season, just remember: you don’t need everything — you just need what works for you.

Happy shopping, mama 💛
